Who we are
The Friends of Pestalozzi Isle of Man, a registered charity, was formed in 1971 to raise money for The Pestalozzi International Village Trust. The Pestalozzi International Village Trust is a registered UK charity offering fully funded scholarships to academically talented 16 to19-year-olds from disadvantaged backgrounds in developing countries - currently Africa and Asia.
The scholars study for the two-year International Baccalaureate Diploma at Sussex Coast College Hastings, England, while living in the multicultural, multi-faith community of the Pestalozzi International Village in Sussex. Pestalozzi encourages the scholars to share their cultures and experiences with the local community through educational, cultural and voluntary interaction.
The Trust actively promotes the educational philosophy of Swiss philosopher, Johan Pestalozzi (1746-1827), who believed in educating the whole person: the head, the heart, and the hands. The Pestalozzi scholars share a common desire to make a positive difference, using their education to benefit others.
The work of Friends of Pestalozzi Isle of Man and goals for 2011/2012
Every year the committee of the Friends of Pestalozzi Isle of Man Group holds a reception, raising money through ticket sales, a raffle and donations - with generous contributions from committee members and the hosts keeping costs to a minimum. Sometimes a student from the Pestalozzi Village is able to attend the reception and, during his or her stay on the island, to give school assemblies and media interviews.
Throughout the year different schools hold dress-down days in aid of Pestalozzi, and they receive the ladybird badge in recognition of their support. Pestalozzi is often represented in the Manx Charity Challenge. This sees secondary school students preparing presentations about the work of the charity, supported by committee members.
To mark the 40th anniversary of Friends of Pestalozzi Isle of Man, the committee embarked on an ambitious project to identify one student at Pestalozzi Village in Sussex, fund them through the two-year IB and follow their progress during the course and beyond. Three weeks before the 40th anniversary the Manx Overseas Aid Committee(MOAC) confirmed they would match the amount raised by Friends of Pestalozzi, up to £10,000 to fund this one student.
We are pleased to name Dechen Yangkyi (see projects icon above for more info on Dechen), a first year Pestalozzi student from Tibet, as the Isle of Man Scholar for 2011-2013. The money raised by the Isle of Man Group, with support from the Manx Overseas Aid Committee, will cover the cost of her two-year scholarship.
Our aim for 2012
We need to raise £10,000 pounds in order to fund Dechen fully for two years.
Making connections with other Manx charity The Pahar Trust has worked with Pestalozzi to raise aspirations in village schools in Nepal. Students from Pahar-supported schools have sat the Pestalozzi scholarship tests and a Pestalozzi student volunteered at a Pahar School during her summer holiday. It is important to remember that these charities ONLY provide education to the age of 16, hopefully Pestalozzi can provide the bridge for them to continue their education.
