Are you up for a great challenge this summer? If yes then you’ll be pleased to know that Race the Sun is back !!! Now in its third year this gruelling challenge is a team relay race in which each team must complete a clockwise lap of the Island’s Radd ny Foillan 98 mile coastal footpath. Before the sun sets!
The charity event, organised by The Children’s Centre and sponsored by Mann Made Group, will take you across rugged cliff tops, through lush glens, over mountains, along tidal estuaries and isolated beaches.
Last year saw over 13 teams take on the challenge and already, a growing number of teams have signed up for the big day in June, but if you have still to commit and want to find out more about the event, then The Childrens Centre are holding a special Race the Sun open evening on Tuesday May 11th at The Childrens Centre, starting at 6pm.
“It’s a great opportunity to find out about Race for the Sun or to assess how your plans are coming along and to meet other teams,” explains The Children’s Centre’s Fundraising Coordinator Mark Eastham.
“And if you are struggling to find numbers for your team, or you would like to join another team, this is a great chance for you to meet other people in the same predicament and possibly join forces,” Mark added.
The race itself is scheduled for Saturday June 19th – one of the longest days of the year – and gets underway at 4.47am when the sunrises. Teams must complete the course by sunset at 9.55pm. The event starts and finishes on Peel seafront opposite the sailing club.
The average distance for each leg is 10 miles based upon a maximum number of 10 in each team and this year there’s no minimum number, so technically if your could enter as an individual . The cost of each entry is £300 per team, including a £50 deposit.
Antony Bell-Scott, a well known local Tri Athlete described his experiences of the event by saying “I have taken part in Cycling, running and triathlon events all over the world, and Race the Sun is without doubt the most enjoyable, we’ll be back in 2010 with are star man Ed Gumbley to try and smash the current record of 13:51:58”
Sponsorship of the event by Mann Made Group will mean that every penny raised through the event will go to supporting Children, Young People and Families across the Island.
