Who we are
We are the Manx Dyslexia Association (MDA), a registered Manx charity. Founded in 1993, we have done a great deal to raise awareness and increase understanding of this specific learning difference on the Island. Our current committee consists of education professionals and parents. The MDA works with parents of dyslexic children, education and health professionals and dyslexic adults.
Our aims
We aim to ensure the recognition of dyslexia (or Specific Learning Difficulty) as a disability (learning difference) needing support and special educational strategies and to ensure that these are available to all dyslexics.
We aim to ensure that each dyslexic individual has the opportunity to fulfil his or her potential.
The work we do
In a typical calendar year our programme includes:
- maintaining a telephone helpline, email address and web page
- providing information sources
- running Parent Aid events to help parents of dyslexic children
- producing a quarterly members’ newsletter
- hosting an annual conference led by a leading (international) dyslexia specialist
- liaising with Island schools and the Isle of Man College
- promoting Dyslexia Friendly Teaching in schools and colleges
- consulting with the Department of Education
- providing a small stock of specialist books at Onchan library
- keeping abreast of current research and developments
- raising awareness of the strengths a dyslexic learning style can bring and raise awareness that dyslexia is a learning difference
