Who we are
Age Concern Isle of Man (ACIOM) believes that each person has the right to a life which maintains their personal independence, safeguards their privacy, offers genuine and informed choices and provides opportunity for them to enjoy and contribute to the community as fully as possible. The organisation is committed to providing services that respect and promote those rights.
Our aim
Our aim is simple: to help everyone make more of life. The things that we do ensure that older people have the opportunity to live life to the full. We believe that age should be valued. We believe that there should be just as much choice available to the old as the young and we believe in your right to stay independent for as long as possible.
The work we do
Day Care Centres
Age Concern Isle of Man has five Day Care Centres on the Island, located in Douglas, Peel, Ramsey, Onchan and Port Erin. These are run in partnership with Social Services.
Advice & Information
Age Concern Isle of Man offers information and advice on a wide range of issues. We’ll provide you with the facts and you can make choices and decisions knowing you have reliable information. We can help you with a range of issues including money matters, benefits, housing and employment rights, health and social care, leisure and social activities, legal and advocacy services.
Computer Drop-in Centres
Age Concern has five Drop-in centres at Douglas, Peel, Jurby, Ramsey and Port Erin, helping older people with the latest computer technology. The centres provide free access to computers and the Internet for the over 50’s. We also offer tuition on a variety of software as well as the use of broadband and email facilities.
Insurance Services
Age Concern has been involved in insurance for more than 20 years. We have a range of insurance services that are designed specifically with the over 50’s in mind. These include travel, home and car insurance. We also offer Age Concern Funeral Plans.
Lunch Clubs
We have four lunch clubs which meet on different days of the week. The clubs offer delicious home cooked food and the opportunity to meet new friends.
Practical Support Service for the over 50’s
Robin Smith (tel: 453344), our Age Concern Isle of Man approved handyman, will carry out a variety of home repairs, DIY jobs and maintenance. The service charge is £18.00 per hour and any materials are charged at cost.
Activity Centres and Clubs
These meet regularly and offer friendship, support and fun!
Fundraising Shops
Our wonderful volunteers run two shops in Port Erin and Ramsey and their efforts provide much needed funds to support our services.
C.H.A.T. Bus (Community, Health, Advice and Training)
2010 sees us celebrating our 18th Birthday with the launch of our new service the C.H.A.T bus. The bus will travel to all the more remote parts of the Island to provide a social facility for our most lonely and isolated residents. Not only will it provide an additional outlet for the core services of Age Concern Isle of Man (Advice and Information Provision, Health Care Checks, Training and IT Provision), the bus will be available for on-Island voluntary and healthcare organisations to take their services into the hearts of our communities thereby benefiting the whole community while still holding onto the original concept of an intergenerational community meeting place.
Landmark Appeal
We have set up our Landmark Appeal to raise £1.5 million to create a building that will not only benefit older people but also the entire Isle of Man community. We envisage the centre providing a restaurant, coffee shop, lounge, library areas, Day Care Centre facilities, treatment rooms, an assisted bathing service, multi-purpose sports hall/gymnasium, an Advice & Information centre, computer drop-in centre,a pharmacy, and a mini-market and office accommodation for other charities as well as our own. There will be disabled access throughout, generous parking and landscaped grounds incorporating land for growing vegetables. Please help us to make it happen.
If you would like to find out more about our Landmark Appeal please contact us.
