Who we are

The One World Centre is a Development Education Centre recognised by the Development Education Association.

We are a membership rather than a fundraising organisation, financially supported by leading aid agencies, individuals, and the Department of Education.

What we do

Our mission is to raise awareness of global poverty, inequality and injustice, and encourage a response.

We highlight the scandal of the poverty most of the world’s people live in today, balancing this with stories of hope and progress, and celebrating life and culture in developing countries.

We emphasize how the Island is inextricably connected with the wider world. And most importantly, we look at how global problems can be addressed in our attitudes, our campaigning, our purchasing and our lifestyles.

How we do it

  • Providing resources: At our resource centre in Castletown, teachers, youth leaders and the public can access more than 1,400 books, magazines, CD ROMs, posters, DVDs, videos, games and photo packs on development issues.
  • Visiting schools: We run a whole range of school activities to bring global citizenship into the curriculum, as well as twilight and teacher training sessions for primary and secondary teachers.
  • Campaigning: Networking with local environmental and aid organisations, we campaign to raise awareness of major global issues and encourage local people to get involved.
  • Community outreach: We attend events, speak at meetings, produce quarterly newsletters, and maintain a high profile in the media. We are also compiling a Manx Development Directory of people who have worked overseas with a development project, or have set up a Manx registered charity in the developing world.

Who we’re supported by

  • Christian Aid

  • Manx Co-operative Society

APPEAL

We have an urgent appeal for a computer - ideally a laptop - for use by our dedicated volunteers.

Whether it be first or second hand, any compatible computer will be gratefully welcomed.

If you can help, please telephone Katie on 01624 825464.  Thank you very much.

The Anne Frank + You Exhibition is being held in the Corrin Hall, Peel Cathedral for a month between 4-29 March 2010.  Starting from Anne Frank's writings and experiences, the exhibition is a journey of self exploration for the visitor.

Themes that Anne wrote about in her diary, such as racial hatred, war and conflict and the value of democracy and freedom, are presented in an up to date and contemporary fashion, along with filmed interviews with teenagers discussing their own views, concerns and hopes for the future.

Anne Frank + You was launched in 2005 to give Anne Frank's story and message a current profile for today.  It has strong focus on the issues of identity and moral choice we face in the twenty first century.

If you would like to look at what is going on in the Cathedral at the moment with young people from schools, below is a link to the DVD that Ben Dalglish has made on the behalf of the One World Centre showcasing Mike Bell's workshop.  It is a very powerful piece of filming and, if you want to be inspired, please watch it!  Catherine Quirk, Coordinator for the Anne Frank + You exhibition says "I'm thrilled that we have enabled this initiative to be part of our offering to students in all schools".
